During WWII Sonny was pressed into service in the “Corsair fleet” patrolling the coast for
enemy submarines as many yachts of the time were. There is evidence that “Sonny” was sunk
by an enemy sub off Nassau during her service.
From 1945 to 1990, “Sonny” had two owners, George Bowdoin (an active member of many
America’s Cup syndicates) and Jack Smith both of whom raced and cruised her extensively from
Long Island Sound to Maine.
In the early 2000’s, and now in need of serious work, “Sonny” was sent to the Italian yard,

Brooke Parish of Castine, only her second owner, Mermaid is a regular fixture on the classic yacht
regatta circuit as well as blue water races. In 2011, on the 50th anniversary of her initial participation
in the famed Marblehead to Halifax race, Mermaid won her division placing first in the Schooner,
Yawl, Ketch division and third in fleet on corrected time. For the past 13 years her home port has
been Castine and she can often be sighted sailing under “jib and jigger” on Penobscot Bay.

She won recently overall the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta and also won the Spirit of Tradition award for the 50th annual Opera House Cup. In June 2023 for the Tiedemann Regatta “Katrina” won the Legacy award which was sponsored by the New York Yacht Club.

1988 Peterson design never
completed until redesigned in 2000 by design team Stephens and Waring at Brooklin Boat
Yard as a solid cruising yawl for her new owner. After spending many years with home port of
Nantucket, she came home to Maine when Stephens and Waring were able to purchase her
as their company ambassador. In 2023 they rerigged her as a modern sloop with new carbon
mast for simple, speedy cruising and racing.

Nantucket, she came home to Maine when Stephens and Waring were able to purchase her
as their company ambassador. In 2023 they rerigged her as a modern sloop with new carbon
mast for simple, speedy cruising and racing.

Maine and beyond. We all have a role to play in the health of our ocean and the Rozalia Project

As Henry aged, the design shifted and M+M designed the 42 and also the new 50 sw. We keep the boat in Rockland and bring up family and friends in the summer. The boat has done several races in the Maine area
